This picture might not look like it, but it features the classic rivalry we all know and love - Mercedes vs.....BMW? Yeah, no, that’s a BMW on the right.... At least, its heart is. Or......it could be! Because there was a time in the 80s when you could buy a brand new Lincoln with a BMW inline 6 and a ZF automatic gearbox rather than the smog choked 5.slow and AOD your dad probably bought.

Kinja'd!!!

Just one thing about that inline 6.....it was a DIESEL!

That’s right, Lincoln got their hands on a future classic BMW inline-6 motor arrangement but elected not to get the smooth revving gas powered 6 and instead opted to get a coal rolling, sulfur smelling, glow plug waiting, no-tipping, discount warehouse shopping, accountant loving, anal retentive checkbook balancing, save the whales but fuck the birds, tugboat sounding DIESEL.

Kinja'd!!!

The only good news about this is that we now know for a fact that the engine bay can fit a BMW I-6 in there. So the only thing left to do is someone to wedge in the motor from an E36 M3 in there and make a bizzaro dimension M6.

There was one of these on local CL for eons. It looked to be in decent shape, but sat there for eons, I imagine it scared people or had issues. You could also get this powertrain in a Fox bustleback Continental sedan:

Fun ad, too.  Not sure what planet a Mark VII competed with a C126, but cool story.

I’ve always loved these cars. The idea of a performance sleeper version is cool.

I almost bought a Mark VIII back in the 90s. Not the same as you’re talking about, but here’s a blast from the past:

You realize this means a BMW-diesel Mustang is a possibility within our grasp...

Maybe even not that difficult.  I nominate you to try it.

I’ll put it in my “alleged sports model diesel conversion dream project” queue behind the 924 turbodiesel and the Deutz XJS. Maybe ahead of the 4BT turbo Nash Healey or LaSalle.

Me too!  I thought I’d watch that review and chuckle at our dated 90s tastes, but then I realized that I’d take a serious look at one if I saw it on a showroom floor today!

That Lincoln steering wheel feels very deep uncanny valley to me. It just looks wrong.

Not to go on all stock parts, that is the law. Are we not cars?

The House of Pain is what I should call my garage.

Waiting for that XJS.

I am going the sleeper route, modern high output MB diesel unit in a stock looking 190D Ponton or Fintail body.

Then a reverse swap, maybe a 190D engine in a Pagani.

I used to still think the MkVII is cool as hell. Built this 1:24 kit as a kid and still have it:

You can, but if I ever draw you for Secret Senna, I’m still getting you a sign that says “Orion’s Belt” for your driveway.

Putting any type of industrial engine in an XJS, the strong temptation would be to make a mockery of things by making sure it’s a V12. Obviously.

There are a couple of lines of Deutz V12, and I’m not sure what the smallest (and thus allegedly practical) is. If one were to use a 12V71 instead, one would have to lengthen the front end of the car the better part of 3', but strangely enough probably not widen it, really. It’s *only* about 7" wider.

The real comedy (and one reason to go Deutz for the air cooling and weight) is that a 12V71 weighs 2500lb more than a Jag V12, more if kitted out in turbo. One would have to build a tube frame underneath - not that one wouldn’t have to regardless. What would be really funny would be building up a 2x scale Jag front and rear suspension so it would actually handle, though finding a way to cut down a Dana 60 for IRS would be the stuff of madness.

Wow, you’ve thought this out.  Sounds like this project is going to fly into six figures and full time job hours in no time.  Not to mention, how many of those engines are just sitting around?  Lotto time.  That’s a hell of a frankencar.

The difference between me and a lot of people who would “just work on project cars all day if they could get paid for it” is that my ideas are so much worse - and yet supported by know-how.

The Benz interior is much nicer, but I like the external lincoln styling more for some reason. Perhaps because Chrysler put the MB front end on their K-cars.
